ZIM TEAM TO THE WINDHOEK LAGER AFRICA JACKET GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP DEPART

The Zimbabwean team to the Windhoek Lager Africa Jacket golf Championship to be played in Windhoek departs this morning for the inaugural tournament. The team of three players from each division consists of Gerald Shwabane in Division A, Kennan Breda in Division B and Brighton Nekatambe in Division C. These were the overall winners in their particular divisions from the tournaments that were played nationwide since November 2013 last year.

The tournament starts tomorrow with a practice round, with the actual tournament on 13th and 14th June.  The first day will see the teams battling it out over 36 holes and the tournament finishes on the second day over 18 holes. The nationwide qualifying tournaments included the Hwange Open (for C Division only), the Leopard Rock Open, Dougmore, MAWEGU and the Roland Open of which three highest scores counted. This is an inaugural tournament and it is hoped there will be greater participation in the new round of tournaments that will be announced soon after the finals in Namibia.

As Paul Norris, the Head of Export Marketing at Namibia Breweries said during the launch of the sponsorship last year, “We believe through the Windhoek Lager Africa Jacket Golf Championship that we have an incentive for all aspiring golfers to enter and play in these competitions,”. It is hoped the second round of the tournament will generate more interest as the sponsors seek to make it even better in all areas.

The players leaving today were selected from the top of each division and have an all expenses paid for trip. The players will compete in a tournament to determine the winner in each division and the overall regional champion golfer. Each winner for the three divisions will receive a specially designed trophy. The overall winner on the other hand has the honour of having a plaque on the floating trophy as well as being awarded the Windhoek Lager Green Jacket.
